Shawn Fain

For the first time in our union's history, we have the power to determine who will lead us into our future. This is our shot for true reform of the UAW, to put the power and control of our union back in the hands of the membership by electing leaders who will be held accountable by the membership.

An insurgent candidate has won the presidency of the United Auto Workers union, potentially setting the organization on a more confrontational path as it heads into contract talks this year with the three Detroit automakers.

Shawn Fain, a 54-year-old electrician who has been a member of the union for almost three decades, defeated the incumbent, Ray Curry, after a monthslong election battle in which Mr. Fain’s allies won seats across the union’s executive board.

The monitor stopped short, however, of resolving the presidential race, with Shawn Fain still leading Curry in the ballot count.

The monitor, in a report filed late Friday, said Curry’s team had lodged a protest the night before the vote count in the runoff in the United Auto Workers' first direct election of top leaders was scheduled to resume on Thursday. The protest alleged that flaws in the administration of aspects of the runoff required the monitor to hold off on announcing a winner and instead schedule a redo. The count had been paused since March 4.

March 16, 2023 Statement on Vote Count, and a Message from Shawn Fain:

Dear supporters,

Today, more ballots were counted in the Run-Off Election for UAW President, after counting was temporarily halted on March 4 due to the need for the UAW Monitor to resolve voter eligibility for a number of challenged ballots. As of today, UAW Members United candidate Shawn Fain is still leading 50.2% to 49.8%, by a margin of 505 votes. According to the Monitor, there are fewer than 600 challenged ballots left to be counted, making Shawn's victory all but assured. We will be hearing shortly from the Monitor on the exact number of remaining challenged ballots, and when counting will resume.

In the meantime, here's a message from Shawn Fain: "By now, the writing is on the wall: change is coming to the UAW. Let's count every vote and get to work on putting the membership back in the driver's seat of our union. We're pressing the Monitor to resolve the remaining challenged ballots as quickly as possible. You, the members, have already made history in this election, and we're just getting started. It's a new day in the UAW!”

A message from Shawn Fain about the strike pay increase. Read the full letter below:

"Yesterday, the UAW International Executive Board—led by Ray Curry, and controlled by an Administration Caucus majority—voted to increase strike pay to $500 a week. I thank Ray Curry for agreeing with me and many other UAW reformers that strike pay needed to be raised to $500!

"While this is a reform I wholeheartedly support—and which UAW Members United candidates who were delegates at the 2022 Constitutional Convention voted for—the timing of this vote represents a cynical, last-ditch effort by the Curry Team to convince the membership that they’re reformers.

"Don’t fall for their ploy: Ray Curry and the Administration Caucus overturned a motion to increase strike pay to $500 at the UAW Constitutional Convention in July 2022*, which was enthusiastically supported by reformers, including myself.

"A delegate from Case New Holland, which had already been on strike for two months, motioned at Convention to increase strike pay to $500 to help sustain the strike. This passed overwhelmingly with the support of many UAWD members and reformers. However, on the final day of the Convention, Ray Curry and his Admin Caucus successfully fearmongered delegates into supporting an unprecedented reversal of the vote by misleading delegates to believe the strike fund couldn’t support an increase in strike pay."

Ray Curry worked against retirees' right to vote in IEB elections. Our retirees deserve better.

Ray Curry worked against retirees' right to vote in IEB elections. Our retirees deserve better.

In his second status report, court-appointed Monitor Neil Barofsky, detailed the process of deciding whether or not to allow retired members the right to vote in International Executive Board (IEB) officer elections. After reviewing our UAW Constitution, the Monitor came to the conclusion that retirees should be allowed to vote.

Wrote Barofsky: "The Monitor’s determination that retirees should be included in the Electorate was based on the Monitor’s interpretation of the UAW’s existing constitutional provisions and practices. For example, the UAW Constitution provides that any retired member in good standing is entitled to “retired membership status,” which provides “all of the privileges of membership,” with three enumerated exceptions that are not relevant to the election of International Officers. As a matter of UAW practice, moreover, retired members have previously voted directly and indirectly for International Officers, whether by serving as Constitutional Convention delegates (who then voted for International Officers), voting for delegates to the Constitutional Convention (who then cast such votes), or being involved in retiree-specific groups, which also elect members to serve as Constitutional Convention delegates (who then voted for International Officers). To hew as closely as possible to those constitutional provisions and practices, the Monitor established Rules allowing retirees to vote in the Election. "

While Barofsky interpreted the Constitution as allowing retirees the right to vote, Ray Curry and the General Counsel were making the case to prohibit them from doing so.

Barofsky: "Retirees’ eligibility to vote was discussed with the UAW over a period of time. Initially,

the UAW’s lawyers advised the Monitor that they interpreted the UAW Constitution as prohibiting

retirees from voting and provided arguments for that position. However, the UAW ultimately agreed with the Monitor that retired members should be eligible to vote in the Election."

The question of allowing retirees to vote appears to be another example of President Curry needing to be convinced of doing the right thing.

It’s ironic that the Curry Team campaign website states; "UAW retirees paved the way for us, and we must advocate for them in all ways."

Arguing against our retirees’ right to vote is certainly a strange way of advocating for them "in all ways."

A Message from Secretary-Treasurer Margaret Mock

* Shawn Fain on Facebook Live * Tuesday January 31, 2023

WDET Public Radio “Detroit’s Public Radio Station” FM 101.9MHz

February 1, 2023

Hi everyone! This is Margaret Mock, UAW Secretary-Treasurer. I have an important message for you, the membership, but please note that I'm not speaking in my official capacity as an officer right now, but as a concerned UAW member.

My message is: we accomplished something historic in November by electing five Members United candidates, but our job is not yet finished. We need to get Shawn Fain across the finish line for UAW President, and Daniel Vicente for Region 9 Director. We cannot rest on our laurels, because the opposition is coming after us. They're coming after us in a very dirty way, and they're not afraid to tell lies about Shawn, because we have really scared them and they'll do anything  to hold onto power.

Since I was sworn in this past December, it has become even clearer to me how important it is that we elect a new President. The President has final say over staff appointments. And let me tell you, the current leadership is improperly putting all kinds of people, and not based on their qualifications. We can't change that -- I can't change that -- unless we get Shawn in office.

I'm working on improving financial transparency. But there's a limit to what I can do without Shawn and Dan on the IEB. Please, please do everything you can to get out the vote over the next few weeks. If you haven't voted yet, don't delay! And mail your ballot back the same day. At the latest return your ballot by February 17 to make sure it's received at the Ohio post office. Thank you for listening.

Shawn Fain says the UAW members he has been meeting during his campaign to become the union’s next president are angry.

The long-running corruption scandal that sent two former UAW presidents and other union leaders and auto executives to prison and a sense that the leadership is detached from the concerns of rank-and-file members are two of the reasons, according to Fain.

Fain, who served 10 years as a UAW international representative and was a former skilled trades committeeperson and shop chair at what's now the Stellantis Kokomo Casting Plant in Indiana, wants to unseat Ray Curry, who was picked to replace Rory Gamble when Gamble retired as president in 2021.

This is what we're hearing when we speak to UAW members all over the country: "No matter what sector they're from, members are fed up with leadership....We have to get back to a membership-led union, where our top leadership serves themselves first and the membership last. To my UAW family,
We have a unique opportunity in the UAW Runoff Elections to make a difference in the lives of all UAW members. First, please check to see if your ballot has arrived in the mail. If not, please call the UAW Monitor at 855-433-8683 as soon as you can to request one.
It's no secret that I'm supporting Shawn Fain. We ran together on the UAW Members United team. Five of us were elected in November - now we need to elect Shawn Fain for UAW President / Members United Discussion and Daniel Vicente For Region 9 Director to bring it home!
I want to tell you five reasons why I personally support Shawn:
1. Shawn has a long record of standing up to management, starting from his days as a committeeman at the Kokomo Casting Plant. In 2007 he publicly stood against ratifying the contract that introduced tiers into the auto sector of our union. While on staff, he has continued this record, fighting Norwood Jewell on measures that would eliminate skilled trades jobs. Shawn is in our corner!!
2. Shawn has an inspiring vision for our union, for how we can start setting the standard again across all sectors. We need visionary unionists leading the way again in the UAW. That's how our great union was founded. He is also backing this vision with a real strategy for empowering the membership to fight back. The days of sitting on our hands while the company screws us are over.
3. Shawn has made it his priority to communicate with the membership. He's not afraid of the membership--quite the contrary. From day one, he's taken vacation time to meet workers at the plant gates all across the country, in Detroit, Louisville, Toledo, Flint, Kansas City, Spring Hill, Quad Cities, Chicago, Wentzville, Sharonville, and more. I was fortunate to join him on many occasions. He also regularly goes on Facebook live and you can bet he'll keep up the conversation with our members once he's elected.
4. Shawn takes seriously the responsibility to represent all the members of our union, and he has made great efforts to get to know workers not just in the Big Three, but also IPS, heavy truck, agricultural implements, aerospace, gaming, TOP and higher education, to name just a few of the many sectors we represent. I know he has had long conversations with members in all these sectors on the campaign trail, learning about their issues.
5. Shawn is a person of heart and integrity!! He's a family man who raised his daughters as a single dad. I am impressed by his decency and honesty as a human being. Some accusations have been made in the heat of the campaign about "outside money". As someone who helped raise money for Shawn and for my own campaign for VP, I can vouch for the fact that we only accepted funds from UAW members and individuals who are family members, friends, and supporters of the labor movement. To suggest there is anything nefarious about this is an insult to our integrity.
In summary, Shawn is simply the right person to lead the UAW.
Make sure you vote in this election. If you haven't received a ballot, call the UAW Monitor at 855-433-8683 to request one. Don't delay! Ballots should be returned by Feb. 17 so they're received on time at the postal facility in Ohio by Feb. 28.
In solidarity!!Mike Booth

Shawn Fain debated Ray Curry in a forum held by the UAW Monitor and moderated by Steven Greenhouse. Here is Shawn's must-watch opening statement:

"I don't forget where I come from. I come from working class roots. Three of my four grandparents were GM and Chrysler retirees, and I don't forget them during layoffs. I don't forget being on WIC to get formula and diapers for my first-born daughter as a single parent. I don't forget living paycheck to paycheck doing the best I could to provide for my family. And I don't forget the membership of our union.

"My opponent and that caucus, on the other hand, has forgotten where they come from, and they've forgotten the membership. They've forgotten about temps and workers who are suffering under the tier system. They've forgotten about members at plants that are closing or being idled. My opponent has forgotten about our young members who are suffering because of inflation and are overworked with unfair work schedules. They've forgotten about retirees. The've forgotten about workers in IPS and other sectors that have incredibly low pay. They've forgotten about future members of our union by refusing to take action to address the shift to electric vehicles.

"We need a change in perspective. We need leadership with a will to fight and real plans to take on our employers strategically. It's time we put corporate America on notice, that our members deserve their fair share and we're coming for it. The one-sided affair of company unionism is done."

UAW Candidate Runoff Forum - January 12, 2023

Watch Shawn Fain’s Closing Statement

This election is not about me, it's about the members of the UAW.  This is your opportunity to change the course of our union.  A few months ago, for the first time in our history, every member was able to cast a ballot to determine who will lead this union and how they're going to lead it.  Initial results have shown the membership is ready for change and ready for leadership that's willing to fight to protect your job security.  62% of the voters in the presidential race voted against Ray Curry and the status quo.  We need to change the culture and truly reform our union.  Curry claims now that he's a reformer, let's look at his two years as president. While Romeo Engine Plant, Trenton Engine Plant Belvidere Assembly Plant and several other plants are on life support.  Curry's priorities were rewarding pensions for staff in May of 2022, given $20,000 retirement bonuses for staff, he fought against one member one vote and the membership being able to vote for our top leadership to keep a convention system that they control the outcome.  He pushed delegates for a reversal of $500 strike pay, hurting our brothers and sisters out there manning the picket lines, especially those at CNH in heavy truck.  The Volvo contract was voted down by the members three times before they addressed their demands.  In AG IMP, at Deer it was voted down twice before they addressed their demands.  He violated the Constitution by hiring staff reps who weren't UAW members, not for specialty jobs, but to hire family members of the IEB and also as political favors.  He was cited by the Monitor for continuing to conceal corruption at the ranks of the top.  He was taken before the Department of Justice and forced to agree to a reboot.  So tell me, what the hell does any of this have to do with putting the needs of the membership first?  This is our generation's defining moment and this is our shot to take back our union and put the membership back in control.  Remember this when you go to mark your ballot, Ray Curry doesn't want you to have the right to mark that ballot.  So here's the options, you can elect President Curry and except more of the same top down, IEB first mentality and the company union philosophy, or continue on a course of complacency and inaction while the plants continue to close and our members in IPS and other sectors struggle to get by, living paycheck to paycheck, trying to stay above the poverty line while we continue to fall further behind in EV and our leadership continues to aim low and settle lower.  Or you can finish the job of voting for change, so together we can abandon the company union philosophy and shift the power and control of our union back in the hands of the membership and take action and get back to strategically fighting for our livelihoods and the working class. Thank you for taking the time to listen.

It's high time we elected a UAW President who will side with the membership, not with management! #giveawayray

The UAW Factory Whistle Show’s host said he has talked to many former co-workers over the past 5 weeks that were for Curry, but now voted for Fain in the runoff election.  Shawn Fain did 4 hours of question and answers on this show.  That took guts in my way of thinking.  I think Shawn is the right person to bring back the pride of being a UAW member.  If I was a dealer, office worker, nurse, teacher, part plants I have faith Fain will fight equally for all sectors of our union.

In his third report filed in July of 2022, Monitor Neil Barofsky wrote that he had become so frustrated with the lack of cooperation by the top leadership of our union, he felt compelled to go to federal prosecutors in an attempt to resolve the issue.

When informed of what Barofsky referred to as the UAW’s “pattern of uncooperative and obstructive behavior," federal prosecutors notified Ray Curry that the union was on the verge of having "steps taken against the UAW for violating the consent decree."

The report noted that Dawn Ison, the U.S. attorney, 'expressed her strong disapproval' of the UAW’s 'uncooperative posture' toward the monitor."

It was only after federal prosecutors threatened to take action, that Curry finally began fully cooperating with the Monitor.

When asked about the Monitor's report, Curry points to the end of the document, where Barofsky writes that he has renewed his 'optimism that the Union has turned a corner in its commitment to the monitorship.'

However, in the very same report, Barofsky warns that this is not the first time he has expressed optimism about the UAW’s cooperation after a change of approach by the union only to be obstructed once again.

But questions remain; why did Ray Curry have to be forced by federal prosecutors to comply with the consent decree before he actually began doing so? Why was Curry withholding information and concealing an internal investigation from the Monitor in the first place?

Thank you to the membership of Local 1853 at GM Spring Hill who took the time to speak with Shawn. We heard from numerous workers that GM LLC is being used to divide the union and is undermining solidarity and working conditions in the plant. We also heard good ideas for fighting back, like improved member education and a tougher stance in negotiations.

Finishing a great campaign trip to talk to members at the gates! Shawn met workers at Local 862, Ford Kentucky Truck Plant; GM Bowling Green, Local 2164; GM Spring Hill, Local 1853; and Ford Sharonville Transmission, Local 863.

Everywhere we go, the membership is fed up with tiers and self-serving leadership that looks out more for the company than the membership. Ballots are in the mail now and people are voting! Let’s finish the job and change our union.

Ray Curry opposed your right to directly elect International Executive Board officers

As members from all across our union begin mailing their run-off ballots back to the election vendor, it's important to remember that Ray Curry opposed your right to directly elect International Executive Board officers.

The Administration Caucus -- now led by Curry -- has maintained control over our union for decades largely because of the delegate election system.

As reporter Luke Ramseth wrote in a Toledo Blade article from October of 2021, the delegate election system was a process where "the union's leadership could easily pressure a relatively small number of delegates to support the favored slate of candidates.

"The pressure starts at caucus meetings at the convention, former attendees say, where delegates can rub elbows with the current union leadership and enjoy hors d'oeuvres and drinks. But to hang around with the top brass and make connections at these meetings, attendees must first agree to vote for the current leadership's positions and slate of candidates.

In some cases, UAW leadership would herd delegates from one region into a room to tell them how to vote on the candidates and issues, recalled Gregg Shotwell, a UAW retiree from Grand Rapids, Mich."

"In theory, it would seem like (the convention system) could work, and maybe a long time ago it did work," said UAW retiree Martha Grevatt. "But right now, it’s not serving the membership. It’s keeping leadership in power, from one person to the next.”

After decades of what has essentially been a one-party dictatorship, It should come as little surprise that under the first-ever direct elections of IEB officers, a number of candidates who opposed the Administration Caucus were voted in by our UAW membership.

One can easily imagine these election results are probably the reason why Ray Curry opposed the method from the very beginning.

We received a request to share this post in support of Shawn Fain written by Matt Frantzen, who is a Committeeman at Local 1268, Belvidere Assembly Plant, which is now idled. We thank Brother Frantzen for his support, and for fighting so hard on behalf of the members of his local.

It is unconscionable for the Curry Team to have done  so little to stop the closing of Belvedere and so many other plants. This is the outcome of the Curry Team's company union philosophy, which we must decisively reject.

----

POST FROM MATT FRANTZEN:

For those individuals that are UAW members (specifically in Belvidere- Local 1268 Belvidere Assembly) You will get a chance to vote for your International UAW President. The candidates are Ray Curry and Shawn Fain.

I am supporting Shawn Fain as President. His position on Active workers and Retirees is inline with where I am at. They both need to be represented, he is the person that will address every member. I have had the honor of working with Shawn on the Chrysler Counsel and Areawide since 2005. I have also been able to work with Shawn on the National Agreement in 2009 based on the Government concessions we were required to take and the 2011 agreement. I can speak from experience, he has fought against the Appointed Leadership we’ve had in the past. This has been his approach since 2005 when I met him (probably before though). He has always called out those in power even when it was unpopular to do so, he did it. After 2011 National contract negotiations he was offered an appointment. This wasn’t because the National department wanted the best and smartest working with them. It was an attempt to shut him up. Shawn was one of the smartest and driven on the Counsel. At that point, General Holiefield knew Shawn was someone to watch. What better way to do that then put Shawn on his staff. This way Shawn would always have it held over his head that he could be sent back to his plant, if he didn’t fall in line. I will say, Shawn didn’t fall in line with the VP, or any VP he worked for. While working for VP Estrada, he was demoted to the training center because he questioned her decision making. This position that Shawn held makes it easy for the ”Appointed President” Curry to attack. Curry continuously mentioned in the Presidential debate that he (Curry) was making things happen while Shawn Fain was sitting behind a desk. Please keep this in mind when you vote, Curry has been President while Shawn has been assigned to his position. The losses, failures, etc… have occurred during Curry’s presidency. I am a Local 1268 Shop Committee member. As you may know, my plant is being idled/closed. Those that are Reps or members of a facility that has been idled know the terminology between idled and closed are pretty much the same. President Ray Curry has not reached out to our Local Shop Committee. We were originally slated for “Idling” in June, the company moved it up to the end of February. We still haven’t heard from President Curry’s office. I have nothing to report to my members of Local 1268 from our International President’s office. As far as the member’s at Local 1268 are concerned, we’re not sure Curry is aware that Local 1268 is in the position we are in. Maybe it’s due to the elections that are going on, if so, that’s unacceptable. Ray, your appointed position of President of the International Union must take precedence while you are actively in office.

I’m not going to pretend that I know what I’m doing on Facebook. Or, what it takes to post an opinion or concern on this format. The fact is, I am representing people impacted by the corporation deciding to “Idle” our plant. All UAW members need to realize that we are on an island in Belvidere, Illinois. The current UAW President hasn’t reached out to us. There are some that will tell members that we need to vote for someone with experience to handle this issue and contract negotiations that will be taking place in September. I can only report what our current leadership has done while actively in office. Do not fall for the bullshit that some elected individuals will try to put in front of you. We have seen what the current administration will do for you, ask yourselves, is that acceptable? Be honest with yourselves, your families and the retirees that made it possible for us to have a job, is this acceptable? My answer is, no, this unacceptable. We, as a country, as a Union, are Not in a concessionary position. Vote for Shawn Fain.

Again, I’m a newbie to Facebook. I’ll be the first one to tell you that I don’t know what I’m doing on Facebook. Please forward this post or whatever it is that needs to be done to get this information out.

1,350 union workers are losing their jobs at an Illinois plant, an early signal about the staying power of green manufacturing jobs in the United States.

“The sad reality of this is, over the last year and a half, since President Curry’s been in power, and Vice President Estrada, the company has awarded more than three different products, and Belvidere could have had every one of those,” Fain said on the live stream. “They’ve had ample opportunity to take on the company and to get product there, and prevent thousands of layoffs.”

“When are we going to stop the bleeding?”

The news comes as the UAW, which represents Stellantis workers, faces an existential battle for the growing electric-vehicle industry. That fight is playing out in factories, as workers push to organize new battery plants, and in the union’s internal politics during recent leadership elections.

A UAW reform caucus notched historic wins earlier this month, electing six candidates to officer positions in the union’s first-ever direct election. Challenger Shawn Fain will face current president Ray Curry in a runoff election next month, in a vote that will test the rank and file’s appetite for more aggressive action.

Announcement of candidacy for President of the UAW, June 30, 2022

Shawn Fain has served the UAW at every level for over 20 years, primarily for five terms as a Skilled Trades Committeeperson and Shop Chair at Local 1166 (Stellantis Kokomo Casting Plant) and 10 years as an International Rep.

Shawn has experience with negotiations at the local and national level and as an International Rep. He opposed the 3/2/120 schedule when it was initially launched in 2003 at Mack Engine Plant, the Global Engine Manufacturing Alliance (GEMA) agreements, and he was anti-ratification during the 2007 National agreement that implemented the Two-Tier system at Chrysler. Shawn worked with other international staff and local leaders to stop the conductor initiative that then-VP Norwood Jewell agreed to with the company behind closed doors.

UAW Candidate Forum Opening Statement, Sept 23, 2022

Shawn UAW Presidential debate: "We need leadership at the top who will take action when our members' futures and livelihoods are at stake...We've had at least ten years of perfect conditions for regaining what was lost during the great recession. All we've seen is lost opportunities due to the IEB being focused on themselves rather than the membership. Our membership can't afford four more years of missed opportunities!"

_________________________________________________________

UAW Candidate Forum Closing Statement, Sept 23, 2022

Shawn Fain laying out our choices in his closing statement in the UAW Presidential debate.

"Here are your options: you can elect the Curry Solidarity slate and make the companies' dreams come true and expect more of the same top down, IEB-first mentalityand their company union philosophy. Or you can elect inexperienced candidates, some of whom have never written a grievance or negotiated a contract and waste another four years of opportunity as they learn the ropes of how to be a union rep.

"Or you can elect myself and our UAW Members United slate of experienced candidates who are dedicated to putting the membership first, shifting the power and control of our great union back in the hands of the membership, and effecting real change by eliminating the company union philosophy and taking action with the membership to get back to a union that's going to strategically fight for the membership and the working class!"

UAW Retirees’ Right to Run and Vote in IEB Elections

During the process of establishing the official rules for the upcoming International Executive Board (IEB) elections, the court-appointed monitor felt that our UAW constitution was ambiguous as to whether or not retirees should be allowed to run for IEB office. After much consideration, he ultimately deferred the decision of retiree eligibility to our UAW president, brother Ray Curry (see page 15 of the monitor’s second status report).

Despite the positive sentiment often expressed by theCurry Solidarity Team about our retirees, President Curry ruled against their eligibility to run for IEB office.  The current IEB reaffirmed his determination, disenfranchising 600,000 of our members. Not coincidentally, two retirees, John Guinan and Jim Coakley, had already announced their intention to run against Curry.

Furthermore, it was the opinion of the IEB and the IUAW's General Counsel that retirees shouldn't even be allowed to VOTE at all in IEB elections. This was a position they advocated for to the monitor and his team on multiple occasions before finally relenting on the issue.

At convention, John Weyer (Local 869), a Members United supporter, was the delegate who motioned to bring an amendment allowing retirees to run for IEB office out of committee. The motion garnered well over the 15% threshold of delegate support needed to bring the amendment onto the floor for debate. However, once the motion was on the floor and discussed, the majority of delegates — following instructions from the Administration Caucus — ultimately rejected the amendment. This amendment was also supported by delegates Rich Boyer (Local 140) and Daniel Vicente (Local 644), candidates on the Members United team for vice president and Region 9 director, respectively.

UAW Members United firmly believes that our retirees are a wealth of knowledge and experience and are invaluable members of the UAW. They paved the way for current and future generations of UAW members. This is why Members United candidates and supporters advocated for the right of retirees to run for IEB office. We also need to fight for raises for retirees at the negotiations table, ensure that their health benefits are protected, and that they are taken care of by our union.

To do this, we need to empower our retirees, not disenfranchise them.
